Barcelona is calling, and not just for the beaches. From the floor of ITB Berlin, we sit down with Pete Comeau and Florence Kaci to preview Phocuswright Europe 2026 and why it has become a must attend event for travel leaders who are driving real decisions. We break down what sets it apart, from the venue and energy to its focus on meaningful insights and dealmaking over sheer scale.
A major focus of the conversation is AI in travel and what AI transformation actually looks like inside leading companies. We explore the types of executives taking the stage in Barcelona and why their perspectives matter across distribution, product, marketing, payments, and partnerships. Expect practical insight into how strategy teams are approaching AI, where the pressure points are, and what is rising to the top of the industry agenda.
Florence also shares an important update. 2026 will be the final year Phocuswright Europe is hosted in Barcelona before relocating in 2027. We discuss what is new for this year’s event, from the opening night programming to more curated roundtables and breakouts, as well as the Global Startup Pitch open to founders worldwide.

Why Focus Right Shows Up
SPEAKER_00Hello everyone and welcome to a live recording of Travel Trends focused on Focus Right Europe 2026, which I'm thrilled to be back for and continue our amazing partnership with our friends over at Focus Right. I'm actually in Berlin today at the ITB conference, and which is why we're recording live. And I have the pleasure to bring to you Pete Como, the managing director of Focus Right, who's based in the U.S., and Florence Cachi, who runs Focus Right Europe, and she's based over here in Nice, France. The event itself is in Barcelona, June 15th to 17th, 2026. And it's an extraordinary hotel. I had the first privilege to go last year. Many of our listeners would have heard our event Spotlight. And it was truly extraordinary. We had so many people lined up for interviews. That was actually a really cool experience as well. And I just wanted to remind all of our listeners that we have a special discount for the Focus Right Europe conference on Traveltrendspodcast.com. So make sure that you check that out and book a ticket to join us in Barcelona. And don't forget, if you do, send me an email, Dan at Travel Trends Podcast, and I will make sure that I interview you on our event spotlight there. Now, let me bring in these two legends of the industry. First, Pete, welcome back to Travel Trends. Thank you, Dan. Great to be here in Berlin with you. Tell everybody a little bit of what brought you to ITB Berlin. I saw your booth was buzzing yesterday. You had a big event last night. Yes.
SPEAKER_02We've had a deep partnership with the folks at ITB for I think 20 years. So we used to produce a full day of content. Now we support uh you know their press conference on on Monday. We kind of help them open their conference with some data on the state of the industry, uh, lots of you know, lots of content around AI, as you would imagine. Um, we produced a leadership exchange yesterday for the first time, which was fantastic. So Florence and I moderated a group of 40 industry executives um where we kind of defined some topics and themes around what the future of travel looks like and what we need to accomplish over the next three years to see the vision. And uh that was a fantastic session. We had a dinner last night, so yeah, we've been super, super busy.
SPEAKER_00Oh, that's fantastic. It was great to see you in action yesterday. And for many of our listeners, the preview episode you heard when we focused on Focus Right Europe last year was actually recorded in the Focus Right booth at ITB. And actually, that's why I wanted to acknowledge the fact that we're here. We're obviously big advocates of ITB. I came to ITB for the first time last year and had a tremendous experience. I'm actually speaking on stage uh later today, and I've been doing podcast recordings. You can hear actually the one that I did at Get Your Guide's office in Berlin. So be sure to check that out. But this special episode is intended to make sure that everyone knows what's happening in Focus Right Europe. And Florence, I'm keen to bring you in in a moment to discuss that. But tell everyone your day one experience at ITB and why you enjoy coming to this conference.
SPEAKER_01Well, ITB is definitely the must-to-go conference um in the travel industry, and Focus Right has been present every year, as Pete mentioned, for the most yeah, for the past 20-25 years. It's all started with um the one-day conference uh put together by Philip Wolf at the time. So we're still very involved in the programming. Mitra Sorelas and Linda Fox uh from the Focus Wire team were moderating uh super great sessions yesterday on the Orange Stage at the convention center at ITB. Um the first day at ITB is always super buzzing for us because, as Peach mentioned, we were running for the first time the leadership exchange at ITB yesterday, as well as as president and CEO deaner.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, fantastic. No, it's great. I think one of the other things I just want to acknowledge, too, for all of our first-time listeners that coming to ITB, it can be a challenge to navigate for the very first time. But once you've actually been in uh for your first year, when you come back, you start to understand the numbers and the layout and how everything works. So you guys were in a similar booth this year as you were last year, as I saw.
SPEAKER_01Yes, we always in the technology hole, but um don't get us wrong, we still get lost at ITB.
The ITB Hallway Podcast Moment
Focus Right Europe Origins And Venue
SPEAKER_00Well, just on that note, so yesterday morning I was headed to where I was gonna base myself, which last year I uh camped out at the Focus Right booth, and actually uh Deborah Roth, who runs ITB, she's been on our podcast, our preview episode, and she's relevant because I want to share a uh quick story with all of our listeners, uh, which was really heartwarming for me yesterday. But when um uh we did a preview episode, it helped everyone understand the layout. But last year I was at Focus Rights booth doing a few recordings, and this year I based myself out of the Adventure Travel and Trade Association booth, which was a good thing, especially seeing how busy you guys were yesterday. So I I've been sit set up at the back doing some podcast recordings and some meetings, and yesterday I managed to navigate to 4.1 booth 217. If you've been to ITB, you'll know exactly what that means. Uh otherwise you'll be totally confused what a 4.1 is because this is a conference that has multiple levels. So you've got 4.2, and and so there's three different levels, and there's all these different buildings. But I was impressed that I remembered enough that I got right to 4.1, found 217, and actually was a few minutes behind for the uh first meeting that I had. And the the gentleman that came to meet with me, we instantly went for a coffee and we were standing in line, and there was a lady behind us that kept looking over, and then she said, Are you Dan Christian? She took, she had just taken her headphones off. I noticed that she was just look thought she was listening to music, and uh, but it took her a moment, she would had to look, she was looking at me, and she's and she said, I was just listening to your podcast, and I heard your voice, and it was I was she's like, I thought the podcast was still going. And she's like, I thought I I thought I turned it off. And I said, That's I'm not I'm sorry about that. This is this is my voice, this is me all the time. And she's like, No, no, it's sex. She's like, I I can't believe I'm meeting you on the first day that I've like, and she was and I said, What episode were you listening to? The ITB preview episode. So she was getting herself pumped up for the event and listening to Deborah sharing all the highlights of what the plans were this year, with Angola being the big sponsor, and and then she was telling me some of the things that she was planning that she heard from the podcast. So for me, it was it was great validation, not only that um that uh people are out there listening, but also taking action and coming to the events and then learning from this. So, having had that experience yesterday, which was uh definitely a pretty cool way to start the day, I want to make sure that we have the exact same impact on Focus Right Europe. And so, Pete, I'm gonna come back to you on this topic because you know it was my first time last year. Europe is obviously a very important market for Focus Right. You have uh a beautiful hotel that you host this event in, and the venue was extraordinary. Um, tell everyone a little bit about Focus Right Europe for anyone who's not familiar with the conference you run here.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so we we um as as as I've discussed, we used to have a full-day event at ITB, and we decided to launch an independent conference, I think 2014 or 2015. So we started off in Dublin, we were there for a few years, moved the event to Amsterdam, um kind of through the early pandemic, and then we've been in Barcelona ever since. And uh Barcelona is just such a great city, uh, and there's a lot of travel tech in Barcelona, and obviously it's a it's a great place to be in June. Uh so we've for the last couple of years made our home at the um the Melia Torre Molina, which is a beautiful hotel, a little bit outside of the city center. There's an amazing conference facility uh right next door, lots of gardens, great open space, and it's it really suits our event really well. There's lots of spaces to have roundtable discussions and breakouts and networking and the focus wire studio and all the stuff that we like to do at our conference. Um, so we're excited to be back again this year. Um, we we've changed the formatting a little bit, the content's gonna be fantastic. We've got a lot of of kind of corporate strategy and chief strategy officers that are really thinking about how they're integrating AI into their into their systems and positioning themselves. And you know, we have Vivi Hu from Amadeus. Um she's the new SVP at corporate strategy. We have uh the chief business officer of Booking.com, so he's got a big job to kind of lead help lead that business through, you know, kind of an AI transformation. Matthias Headland from from uh eTraveli, Karen Boulda, who's like a product leader at Expedia on their B2B side. So yeah, tons of of really good content. Um of course, focusing around how how AI is gonna impact our our industry. Fantastic.
AI Leaders Headline Barcelona
SPEAKER_00Karen Bolda actually has been on our podcast, like Pete has as well. If you want to listen to it. She she has a little bit of energy. Yeah, just a little bit. And it's amazing. She started off doing computer science, and she's one of these incredible female executives in travel that has a technical background, but yet is very strategic and can function at a high executive level, and but has that deep knowledge and expertise about technology. So, yeah, she's very impressive. Uh, great that she's gonna be there as well. Obviously, she was there last year, but this year speaking in the capacity. The uh one thing I want to mention to all of our listeners is focusrightEurope.com is the website. So, as you're listening to this, for those of you who are multitasking and looking to get some additional information to double check those dates, especially given you're probably looking at a calendar as well and trying to figure out if you can make it. Um I'm flying in on the Sunday, the event starts on Monday, and I'm leaving on the Thursday. So that the event is Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, but the main event is on day two and day three, which is the Tuesday and Wednesday.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so it's it's it's we we kind of mix up the schedule a little bit, but this year happens to be on the Monday evening the first World Cup game for Spain. So we're gonna host a World Cup party, um, TBD, but it's gonna be a great way to kick off the event. Uh, so we're we're we're excited about that.
SPEAKER_00Oh, that's fantastic. And Florence, obviously, this is very close to home for you. And it was great to see you in full flight last year in Barcelona. Since you know everyone in Europe, everyone knows you, and they're so delighted to be back at Focus Right Europe. That's the energy that I got to experience in the U.S. for the last 10 or 12 years, as all of our listeners know. I love Focus Right. I love coming to Focus Right conference. I'm thrilled that we have this continued partnership. I love the research and so many aspects of the organization. But it's, you know, the U.S. has always been my focal point, rotating back between East Coast and West Coast. And I want to finish with that in our conversation today for those people that need to make sure that they've booked their ticket or are planning to join us in November. But tell everyone what's going to be so special about Focus Right Barcelona this year.
Last Year In Barcelona News
SPEAKER_01So a lot is gonna be very special. But first of all, um I'll release the news. Um, that's gonna be our last year in Barcelona. So we will announce where we're gonna move Focus Right Europe um in 2027. So anticipation. Okay. So this is your last chance to get to Barcelona. Exactly. That's your last chance to get to Barcelona to the amazing Palo de Congress. So what's gonna be um very important this year as well is that Pete mentioned we've slightly changed the format. So we'll kick off the event on the Monday night with a big opening party on Tuesday. We'll have um the global startup pitch uh followed by an innovation stage as well to present some very key innovations that have been released in the past uh 12 months. Uh, we'll have industry roundtables, uh breakout sessions all on the first day, and the second day will be focused on center stage.
Startup Pitch Highlights And Winners
SPEAKER_00Well, one thing you brought up there that I think is really important just to underscore is the global startup pitch because many people are on the journey to be at your global conferences to make their way to the US. But something that really stood out to me last year at Focus Right Europe was the number of Americans that were there, and that is the largest listener group to our audience. Our uh podcast, you know, we've very fortunate to have listeners like 125 countries plus, I think it's 133 now. But the when you look at the uh core numbers, it's 50% American and about 20% Canadian, and then UK, Australia, obviously a lot of English language markets, and then an incredible long tail for the for all of our global listeners that also want to join us. It's truly a global conference. But one thing I would highlight for Americans is actually making this journey across because so many Americans that were there last year because they see opportunity to grow their businesses in Europe. And even startups. If you're considering the don't wait for November, come to Barcelona.
SPEAKER_01Well, and also something to bear in mind for the startups is that the global startup pitch at Focus Right Europe is not just open for European-based startups, but for um startups based anywhere and at different uh levels. So we will select uh young seeds as well as scale-ups.
SPEAKER_00It would be worth actually mentioning, Florence, some of the uh a couple of standouts because there are so many pitches happening and there's a number of companies that you know they won awards each year. Uh would you mind mentioning a couple of startups that have been involved that have either kind of gone on to success or have uh you know been a key part? Because I I certainly I've seen that in my time, that they're they've gone to Singapore, then they're in Europe, and then they go to Florida.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and we've we uh Wi Wheel the World was the first winner of the global startup pitch, and they've gone on to raise some some money recently. Yeah. Um, so they're they're a a good representation of of finding a company that's you know, they're looking at accessible travel and they're trying to, you know, make hotels and and other places accessible, and they're doing a great job of kind of aggregating and categorizing that content. Um, they've they've, as I said, raised money recently. So it's a good example. Um, and you know, we try to find interesting companies nowadays is one that we've got a partnership with a North Star that is um in the kind of group hotel RFP, you know, helping companies bring their groups to hotels and produce events. And so yeah, there's a lot of really interesting companies that have come through global startup pitch. It's a free competition. Um, so we want to make sure that we find the best of the best early, as Florence said, early stage, as well as scale-ups that have raised a little a bit more money and look at them across the globe.
How Startups Apply And Benefits
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's a great example because Wheel of the World, obviously, their unique uh proposition you know, 10% of travelers are disabled. There's a huge market out there that is underserved. Um, and there's a few companies in that space, it's all of a sudden become a competitive space and an investable space. And interestingly, you mentioned that because they spoke on the main stage, uh, one of the main stages here at ITB yesterday, and I got an alert on my phone that Wheel of the World was speaking. I was like, good for them. They're continuing to go from strength to strength. Um for the startups that listen to this, because we estimate that actually is about 15 or 20 percent of our listeners actually work in the startup space, and we often hear back from startups after these episodes. I want to make sure that they actually know where to go, Pete, to register or to get involved. As you mentioned, it's free for them, so there's no reason why they shouldn't apply to be a part of this. Uh obviously I mentioned the website, but is there any specific details as to how startups should engage with focus right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so there's a number of ways for us to to uh to support startups. So global startup pitch is a really easy one. It's a simple application. Um we are applications are open now through the end of March. Um so we've still got you know a few weeks left for this current batch uh of global startup pitch applications. We're going to um kind of whittle the list down to I think 32 companies by the end of the month. And then we're gonna bring some judges together um to select the finalist, which we'll we'll present live at Focus Right Europe, as we've discussed. So uh it's it's a great way to to kind of tap into our ecosystem of investors and travel executives, and and um there's a lot of other things that we do with startups. We have a uh a reduced rate research subscription that we offer to startups. Uh we produce a startup program at our global conference in November, and we offer that for free. And we actually offer a reduced rate for startups because we know that they feed our ecosystem. They are the next, you know, kind of big companies that are growing. They need mentorship, they need connections. And, you know, that's the role that we play in the industry is making sure that the new wave of innovation comes in, is supported by the rest of the ecosystem. And um, you know, we think that's really an important uh part of kind of our position in the market.
Who Attends And Why It Matters
SPEAKER_00Well, and the one thing I've always loved about Focus Right is the fact that you actually mix the startup ecosystem with high-profile executives from the largest travel companies, and that they are accessible at a focus right conference. I always highlight to people that the Focus Right conference, often people will initially comment the the price is more of a premium, but the experience more than delivers on the ROI, especially when you think of the partnerships that you can realize by being at a focus right conference. And for Lawrence, one thing I want to make sure that we do talk about is the companies that are gonna be there and the types of companies, because I often go to conferences for the knowledge, like that's always been my focus, especially in my previous roles as like a chief digital officer. I've never been on the business development side. I do understand there's huge benefit to networking, and some people that I speak to, they're like, I haven't been to any sessions yet, but I've just done meetings back to back. And that's what they're doing. Yes, that happens. And that's what they're there for. But knowing that that's the case, I just wanted to highlight that to our listeners because if that's your objective, you'll be able to get all those important meetings. And so I'll just share, because this is from my experience being at a focus right conference. Uh, there's a big focus on technology, so there's lots of technology vendors there to understand distribution, marketing, um, travel agents, tour operators, um, and payment providers. Yes. But it's a wide selection. So tell everyone a little bit about the types of people that come to Focus Right Europe and maybe some of the bigger organizations that are a part of it.
SPEAKER_01Yes, of course. So at Focus Right Europe, we have um, I'll say around 600 attendees. Obviously, as Pete explained earlier, Focus Right Europe was launched much later after the Focus Right Global event, and it's really our European chapter. So I'm really proud of this event because uh we get most of the European uh senior executives to to join us uh for three days. We also have obviously um US-based and Asian-based companies, either having their executives from Europe joining us or uh sometimes obviously traveling from the US and from Asia, because as you mentioned earlier, it's a very important place to be um to develop business with uh European companies to better understand how they work and how you can develop partnerships with uh each of them and also identify startups and uh potential investments. So at Focus Right Europe, it's more or less the same profile as FocusRights uh uh in the US. We we get, as you mentioned, a lot of OTAs, tech companies, uh payment uh platforms. Um we get uh cruises companies, hotel groups, of course, uh airlines, uh GMOs, uh obviously very interested uh and much more active now as well in the travel industry and that type of place.
SPEAKER_00No, it's great. And I think that's where you know nearly half of the attendees are sea level or above. Um so like the the profile of the attendees. And these are so the reason I emphasize that is these are the decision makers, these are the people you need to get in front of to get to get deals done.
SPEAKER_01And that's very important because I'm often asked the questions um about you know people ask me where they should go in regards to travel events, travel conferences. Focus right is a conference, we're not a trade show. Yeah, uh not like ITB or World Travel Market or Feature. So the agenda is very different, and as you mentioned, it's really the profile of the people who are there that really makes a difference. It's a targeted networking group.
First-Timer Networking Game Plan
SPEAKER_00Perfect. And the one thing I also want to highlight for any listeners that this is gonna be their first time. Any tips from you, Florence, on your first time? Because that is what stood out to me. And the the lady's name, I just want to make sure I establish this, so feel free to reach out to either of these two people on LinkedIn. I was meeting with Will Plummer from Repaid. So him and I were standing in line together, and the lady that I referenced, her name is Sue Vincent, and she works at Twee Musement. Okay, and she actually heads up the multi-day tour. So she said, I've been listening to your podcast from the beginning because obviously that's a big focus for me and my background, as you guys both know. And so she really enjoys the podcast and was finally thrilled to meet me, but just a serendipitous chance that she was listening to it. So thank you again, Sue. And obviously it's great to meet you here, Will. Um, so I just wanted to validate that uh story so it doesn't just become myth or legend. It was like that really happened yesterday morning. So for other people like Sue Vincent that are looking for any tips or advice for Focus Right Europe, what would be a few other suggestions you'd leave them with?
SPEAKER_01Yes, so I mean the first one is would be that once you you you are registered, you start a bit of homework. Um we release obviously the mobile app uh four weeks prior to the event. So that's the first opportunity to start networking with everyone who's registered for Focus Right Europe, skilling meetings, um organizing you know, drinks, coffees, you know, making sure you attend the right sessions, um, the ones that are the most of interest to you and to your company. And um once you are on site, the Focus Right team is uh is there as well, available to make introductions whenever we can to facilitate um discussions. Um that's what we're here for for three days. So but yes, as a newcomer you also need to to do a bit of homework. Yeah. Look at who's attending the event, who you would like to meet, are you gonna position yourself and start um networking even prior to the event.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01And not just on site.
SPEAKER_00Florence, I know how um people gravitate to you in person. And I then those people who that want to connect with you, I'm uh obviously you're active on LinkedIn, so I'm sure people will reach out to you as a part of this, but then also reach out to the to the wider team. Um obviously they can check out the website. And so um I'm I'm really excited to be back. I wish you every success with Folks Right Barcelona. I'm excited to hear where 2027 is going to be. Um, but yeah, thanks again for the opportunity to be there, and I look forward to seeing you again in a few months' time.
SPEAKER_01Thank you so much, Dan. And we look forward to having you there.
Focus Right USA Plans And Industry Outlook
SPEAKER_00Thank you, France. And Pete, I want to finish off talking about going back to the diplomat in Florida in November. I mean, uh you've probably heard from many people uh like myself who loved attending Focus Right at the Diplomat near Fort Lauderdale in Florida. You guys have moved to a couple locations last time. You've been in San Diego, you've been in Phoenix, and they've all been great conferences, but there's something just special about the diplomat. So I know we're gonna be back there in November. I'm thrilled. But tell everyone a little bit more about the plans for Focus Right, the big Focus Right conference in the U.S.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so we've we've had a long history at the Diplomat. And uh actually last time we were there, there was a major rainstorm that came through, and there might have been a little bit of rain inside the building, but they've since uh done some renovations. It's a fantastic property, it's right on the beach. There's a conference center right next to a big hotel, and it just makes everything really easy. Um, and the European audience loves to come to Miami. It's a little bit easier for them to get to Miami than it is to get you know all the way to Phoenix or to San Diego or West Coast. So we generally have a little bit more European presence uh when we're on the East Coast. Um, but it's uh, you know, it's it's it's a great property where obviously, you know, as far as topics and and you know and ideas for the conference, we're just in the early stages of planning. The theme will be rolled out um in a month or two. We're kind of working behind the scenes on building creative and the theme as it as it is, we spend a lot of time thinking about what's gonna have staying power. Um, you know, what are we gonna be talking about in November? Obviously, with with AI, it seems like every other week there's a new release and something amazing comes out, and so it's it's hard to really pick a timely theme, but um, you know, a lot of the same senior execs will be there. Uh, we're trying to diversify content a little bit. We know that the emerging markets are really important to the growth of the industry. So, you know, we had um we had uh the agoda CEO kind of kick off the event last year, and I think people saw that and and were interested to to understand why we chose the agoda CEO, but he's an amazing speaker, and so we like to to surprise people a little bit with with the type of content we produce. But as it is, 1,500 people or so, everybody is super engaged. It's uh it's an exhausting event, but it's it's always a uh it's always a great way to end the event season as we call it. We kind of have have a stake in the ground that week before Thanksgiving. That's our week. We own that week. So, you know, that that that works really well, and it's a good celebration for the industry. You know, as we know, there's a lot of challenges, geopolitical challenges, economic challenges, but tourism um is super resilient, and we've seen that right through our uh you know through our careers that tourism really is a uniting force, and and we're rallying behind that right now. It's been a tough week. ITB is a great place for us to come together as an industry and talk about what we need to do to you know to really strengthen this industry. Um, but as I said, it it is a uniting force, um, whether you're traveling for business or traveling for leisure, and we're gonna always kind of push that message forward.
Partnership Thanks And Closing
SPEAKER_00That's fantastic. Thank you, Pete. I mean, I couldn't agree more because this is whenever there's a crisis in the travel industry, we need each other more than ever, and we need insights more than ever to help companies figure out how they still grow their businesses in kind of challenging or uncertain times. And going back to the start of our relationship with myself being at the focus right conference, that's why I was always there, despite any of these challenges or setbacks. I was always going to the focus right conference. And when I started the Travel Trends Podcast post-pandemic, the whole idea was to highlight how travel was coming back. And Pete was the first person to invite me back into Focus Right. He gave me a small little room to start recording some conversations, and it was a huge cornerstone to how uh this entire podcast and community was created. So I just want to acknowledge Pete for that, for his leadership and and foresight, and also being open to that type of collaboration because we have a very different audience than FocusWire, and we complement each other really nicely. And so I think the world of the team, I I love our partnership, and so I just wanted to say a sincere thanks to you, Pete, again, and uh to make sure everybody, focusrightconference.com, register, plan to join us, and we'll continue to share share more details about that leading up to. But great to see you here in Berlin, Pete, and good luck today. Thank you so much, Dan. And thanks to our listeners for joining us on this special event preview of the Focus Right Europe Conference. It was a real pleasure to sit down with Florence and Pete here in Berlin at the ITB conference, and just how all these conferences Pete just mentioned, Focus Right USA bookends the year, and we're starting the year really here at ITB. And then as WTM is the last major global event, and then it's Focus Right to close out the year. So fantastic start to 2026, and I look forward to bringing you more spotlights over the course of the year. Thanks a lot for joining us.
